Changes are coming
Some changes I have planned for the near-future:
- I will shut down www.bitcoinutopia.com (this should save us around 60 euros a year).
- Bitcoin Utopia will fund only BOINC projects and sites heavily related to BOINC.
- I should get and set up a certificate to support https protocol.

CPU/GPU apps EOL
We are dropping these apps with the end of a campaign. The reasons are:

- inefficient
- less support from the devs
- app issues

There is a better usage for other BOINC projects.

The pool username is bitcoinutopia6 (not "bu6" because someone had already taken it, hmm?) for slush's pool (https://mining.bitcoin.cz) in Campaign #6 applications. Keep this in mind, so you don't accidentally mine for "bu6", which has nothing to do with Bitcoin Utopia.

WUs for cudaminer_2, sgminer_2, C-cpuminer, cpuminer_4, cpuminer_5, cudaminer_9, and sgminer_9 can be manually aborted if they are not working.

Ipominer.com pool is not using port 3473 at the moment, because there has been a hard fork for Viacoin (VIA) and they are waiting Viacoin mining to come back online again:

Dec 26 6:00 PM Viacoin forked and is currently disabled for mining and payouts until it can be resolved.

Campaign #3 bitcoins exchanged to euros
Today I took all the 9.8631978 bitcoins of Campaign #3 (Milkyway@home) and exchanged them to euros using the local bitcoin service http://bittiraha.fi. I have already gotten 2696.15 euros in my bank account.

I was going to use PayPal to send those euros to Milkyway@home, but PayPal is telling that my credit card is not accepted.

I made IBAN transfer to PayPal Europe and I'm hoping that those euros will show up in my PayPal account during this week, so I can finally make the donation for Milkyway@home.

I wish people could just accept bitcoins for at least three reasons:
- not so many middle men taking fees
- less complicated (now I had to use three different services to make the donation: bittiraha.fi, Nordea bank, and PayPal, and the donation is not even sent yet!)
- faster than bank transfers (the donation would already be there)

Pool server should back online. You can continue crunching
According to http://Multipool.us:

Oct 12 12:22 AM We had some DB issues this morning that took a while to resolve. Things are back to normal now. Profitability numbers will likely be inaccurate today. Thanks for your patience.

Users have reported that everything should be working again. You can continue crunching.

First WUs sent out for Campaign #6
Now there is work available for rbox first. The difficulty is set to 256 to get rid of some worker banned messages and a new command --net-delay was added. The shares length is still unchanged. For the 1.6+ app the shares length will be doubled (512).

HTTP internal server error
With the last server software update this is only affecting older BOINC clients <7.4.x. I recommend to update to BOINC 7.4.22 to get the full potential for ASIC miners (have all CPU cores free). We have reported the issue to the BOINC devs. You could downgrade again if there is a fix and you dont want to use the latest BOINC client.

BOINC 7.4.22 is now recommended for asic users
With the last server software update and all the new changes on the system you need to update to BOINC 7.4.22 to get work. If you dont get work after update try to reattach to the project. This only affecting users with asic apps, if you still running a BOINC version older than 7.4.12 you dont need to update. The work request bug with GPUs is reported and will be fixed soon until we can get it.

Press Release (2014-09-16)
Bitcoin Utopia is a crowd-donation platform that uses Internet-connected computers to mine cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin Utopia then donates, after a fee, the cryptocurrencies for various campaigns like incentive awards and science projects.

Scientific organizations looking for funding for incentive awards and science projects might want to create a campaign on Bitcoin Utopia. Four campaigns have already been started and the successful Aquaponics setup campaign has been documented very well with lots of pictures of the gear bought with the bitcoin donations.

Bitcoin Utopia has over 3700 users and is looking for new volunteers with CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs or ASIC devices ready to mine donations for the campaigns. The instructions how to setup the mining software can be found on the campaign pages.

Bitcoin Utopia is run by a Finnish company Consultum Finland Oy Ltd.

The website should be working again
(Maybe you will learn about this via other forums/users.)

For Windows users who still can't access the site, try this command: ipconfig /flushdns

I was using "CNAME" and "ALIAS" records for bitcoinutopia.net, but I should have been using "A" records instead. I changed to a new server last night and I didn't know that A records were necessary in this case. With the old AWS server, CNAME and ALIAS were working.

Thanks, Christian, for helping me with this issue. Thanks, lefa, for that helpful flushdns parameter.

What does it mean?

I will setup all old non NCI apps again.
Example:

You have the decision what config do you want to run. I will test it first with cgminer test app if its working.

cgminer-test app needs fast ASIC machines for testing
We made some 256 share workunits (15 kilocobblestones) for cgminer-test application. We are testing if Peercoin-only mining makes ASIC machines to work without hangups. Multipool.us has the port 3335 for peercoin-only mining and it should not be using vardiff but constant share difficulty. Let's see if everything works!

This is the commandline parameter for cgminer-test app: --quota 88;stratum+tcp://us-east.multipool.us:3335 -u bu_kampanja1.SHA256 -p x --quota 12;stratum+tcp://us-east.multipool.us:3335 -u bitcoinutopia.2 -p x --shares 256 --load-balance --text-only --no-submit-stale --failover-only

What to do? The job file must be stay in original. Any new command lines must be added to the app_info.xml, for example:

The fee system is not working with anonymous platform
It seems that the fee system (88% for campaigns, 12% for BU) is not working with anonyous platform. I have noticed that there are "1Q..." WUs that have been mining for the campaign, although 1Q... is meant to be the fee for BU. It's good for the campaigns (they are getting more), but it's bad for me and the company (Consultum Finland Oy).

I'm planning a fix for this problem.

I'll make line Z for Bitcoin Utopia. There 100% will be mined for BU. For other lines, the fee will be reduced to 0%.

Some people don't like to use volunteer computing to support a company. After the introduction of line Z option, people would get an option to choose whether to participate in funding Bitcoin Utopia. So, I guess it would be a win-win scenario for everybody.

What do you think?

Hi! Happy New Year!

Our Master URL will change in the near future.
The old: www.bitcoinutopia.com
The new: www.bitcoinutopia.net/bitcoinutopia/

Please, notice the top-level domain will become net.

The website in the com top-level domain will be the main company page and campaign page for Bitcoin Utopia. I hope that will solve the problem that antivirus software won't block the whole domain of www.bitcoinutopia.com which is really important for the company profile. The antivirus software will probably start to block www.bitcoinutopia.net instead but it shouldn't be as huge a problem, because most of the users will probably visit www.bitcoinutopia.com...

Litecoin mining
Hello!

We are about to start litecoin mining in the near future. Keep the CPUs and GPUs ready for that. :)

Current status as of 16th of October 2013
Hello!

Things are going forward slowly, but they are going forward.

Last Sunday I paid the donations for SETI@home and Mars Society Bulgaria's Hydroponics research. That means, all the three projects have now gotten the donations raised. Thank you for making this possible!

I'm getting some help from business professionals later this month, so please, keep the hope up.

14th out of 885. Thanks for making this possible!
Bitcoin Utopia was the 14th most funded project in Standford University's Startup Engineering course. Thanks to all of you for making this possible!

I used this BOINC server to mine bitcoins for the project. Then I clicked Donate Bitcoins -button in Bitcoin Utopia to send those bitcoins from my Bitcoin wallet to Coinbase.

I used this method, because it is not possible to mine bitcoins directly to a Coinbase account as far as I know...

Also, I got some Primecoins (about a worth of 40 USD) for adding a Primecoin support for my project. I exchanged those Primecoins to Bitcoins and they are also in the budget.

This donation for X PRIZE Foundation is not included in the Bitcoin Utopia budget. That was worth of 470 US dollars. I couldn't include that, because I didn't have that money anymore. It belongs to X PRIZE Foundation now.

10,000 new Project #1 workunits with new settings
Hi!

I made 10,000 new Project #1 (100-share) workunits with some new settings. Now there should be two http-protocol pools for 50btc.com using the port 8332 and one http-protocol pool for bitminter.com using the port 80. I hope these new changes will solve some of the problems some users have been facing. There are still the three regular stratum+tcp-protocol pools for 50btc.com using the port 3333.

I also changed some server configuration settings and I hope that more users are able to get workunits.

PS. How much credit do you want per one share?

app_info.xml - choose your own device
This is only needed if you are running a mix of different cards. We can do nothing on the server side to run on the card which you need it so the app_info.xml do the job. The app_info.xml for windows is the biggest one I have ever seen and made.

For more infos and download see here

Special thx goes to x3mEn for the advice in the right direction and 7ri9991 [MM] for the compiled linux app, currently not the standard app but only for testing and the important hint to get the app_info for windows running.

We had a DoS Attack
We had a Denial of Service attack from 81.218.92.186 (186.bint8.interhost.co.il). It increased the CPU load and memory usage and rendered our website quite unresponsive.

I have heard this is not very uncommon with websites with bitcoins. I found the familiar IP address from some bitcoin website's blacklist.

I fixed the problem and everything should work again.

Note: Antivirus protection blocking cgminer
To clarify some things. Bitcoin miner are blacklisted by most of the antivirus programs and dont let it run on your computer. To run it except the BOINC folder or the cgminer file from realtime protection and scan. The program is safe to run. Also check your firewall to let the program communicate with the server pools. It needs a permanent internet connection.

Lots of changes
I made three new projects:
Project #1: Donating $1000 for Mars One
Project #2: Donating $1000 for SETI@home
Project #3: Donating $399 for Hydroponics Research Stage 1

I also changed the bitcoin pool. The old was 50BTC. The new is BitMinter. It also generates some namecoins when mining bitcoins for BitMinter. I also tested p2pool.org (the one I used for mining a good amount of terracoins), but I cancelled most of those workunits yesterday. Not only namecoins, but Bitminter also allows to use Java application to mine for Bitminter pool. I'll add that to the project website soon.

All Terracoin mining (TRC WUs) cancelled
We have cancelled all TRC WUs due problems with the credit rate. If you have still running some abort it. For not credited WUs sent back tell us your host ID. We will give credits for it.

The new serie should have some tweaks in credits due longer runtime.

The project website had and has some problems
Something happened to PHP pages of the server, because browsers didn't open them anymore. They tried to download them, instead. The project website still has some problems. Some of the php pages are working, though. For example, you can probably access the news section: http://www.bitcoinutopia.com/forum_forum.php?id=1

The server status page should work as well: http://www.bitcoinutopia.com/server_status.php

I am currently fixing the rest of the problems.

PS. All bitcoins and terracoins mined are safe and accessible to me even in the worst case scenario where the whole BOINC server and all the backup snapshots of it are completely lost. Of course, this hasn't happened. There are backup snapshots in AWS.
PPS. I haven't loaded any backup copies so everyone's credit should be safe and up-to-date, too.

Terracoin mining
Hi!

Now I have made some workunits for terracoin mining. You'll distuinguish the terracoin workunits from bitcoin workunits by the letters TRC in the workunit name "wu_TRC_V5_100_"...

PS. Here you can see the hashrate and terracoins mined for Vault #5: http://p2pool.org/trcstats.php?address=1LUVYJwzxJonfSZqdjafRfzJCXi7mqkBS

Vault bitcoins to X PRIZE Foundation?
Hello!

We are getting more and more bitcoins. Thank you!

Soon I want to use the bitcoins from the Vaults for funding innovation awards. I think X PRIZE Foundation is the correct place. Should I send all the bitcoins from all the five vaults to X PRIZE Foundation? They don't yet accept bitcoins as far as I know, so I need to exchange to dollars/euros first.

I hope that in the future the organizations will contact Bitcoin Utopia and pay for getting the crowdfunding for their awards...

What do you think of the new website design?

Do you want to see some graphs for bitcoins mined so far?

Status update 2
We have fixed the "Couldn't create host record in database" with the latest BOINC Server Software update. There was a missing column in the host table which avoid hosts not record entries.

One app is now in betatest and should solve the -195 error. New work was added.

A favicon and a logo are added too but the design of the website need still some reworking.

Status update
Henri is currently working on the design of the website. We will adding a logo and a favicon next time.

You need to wait with crunching while we are changing the not working apps at the moment.

Some users reported "Couldn't create host record in database" from the client message. I had run a repair and optimize host table to stop this issue. Pls post your experience in forum.

Project URL will change
Hello.

8 gigabytes of mass storage is not enough for a BOINC server. I'm planning to upgrade the server. If I do that, the project URL will change. AWS apparently doesn't allow to keep the current name, if I stop this BOINC server instance.

So, I'm planning to use http://www.bitcoinutopia.com/ as a new master URL for Bitcoin Utopia. It doesn't work yet for BOINC clients, so it's not possible to attach to http://www.bitcoinutopia.com/ just yet.

Also, if I upgrade to a better machine, it's possible that the AWS bills will be more expensive (it depends if I can still use Amazon Free Tier which is almost free for one year). If the bills will be "too high", I must revive Project #0 (crowdfunding Bitcoin Utopia itself). You can, of course, choose from the project settings, if you want to mine bitcoins for Project #0 and/or for Bitcoin Vaults...

What do you think?

Application errors
It seems that we have fixed the "197 (0xc5) EXIT_TIME_LIMIT_EXCEEDED" error in newer apps. If you still seen this error with your "Bitcoin Utopia Project 0 app" please abort the rest of your WUs to not loosing too much time. We will see if we can credit it next time.

Another problem comes from the HD5xxx and HD6xxx serie.
-->195 (0xc3) EXIT_CHILD_FAILED

The app cannot start. It looks like a driver issue. Some of you can run the app with older drivers and some not. Pls check This thread to track down the error rate.

The project is back
Hello! We are back.

Some people have said it would be a waste of time to wait for the Project #1 to appear. Project #1 would be the first Bitcoin Utopia project for crowdfunding a real innovation award.

So, I made these vaults:
- a bitcoin vault for energy and environment awards: 15htdXzvJWc4ewseT7FzbQ3B4AQAmPGNFV
- a bitcoin vault for exploration awards: 1EgLA38dVF1P9J69y2axDvPMsqTBh27Jk
- a bitcoin vault for global development awards: 1LE1YSCd6bWS46ZWX7kp1TZGh3xPcxxhrX
- a bitcoin vault for learning awards: 17R15UzVMKWEzwK2hk2VNRZk62iym72RgZ
- a bitcoin vault for life sciences awards: 1AzNz3uwTF6VaGSWi9LtKZQaamevpwyrv9
- a litecoin vault for energy and environment awards: LfsxeQg39cfJk1JVGYzcHpvZgnZQqnPMao
- a litecoin vault for exploration awards: LVUmQtmyP5LgUUGZkLqAQrRKqs919QVGmR
- a litecoin vault for global development awards: LR1mVQhrgrX9sG9Ybrh49Qh2598FKfbzyX
- a litecoin vault for learning awards: LPBD28XeszTj8tkPub24pUmCbdqtvkv1Mi
- a litecoin vault for life sciences awards: LSuuhEiMtcsZEF6yT2ttMrWhBoaUoS36eR

Currently, there is a new application or actually two of them: one is for finding 20 shares and the other is for finding 100 shares (for very powerful GPUs). The bitcoins are going to the Vault for Energy and Environment Awards: 15htdXzvJWc4ewseT7FzbQ3B4AQAmPGNFV

With the vault system, user can choose which kind of awards he/she wants to crowdfund. When an award eventually shows up, the bitcoins from the appropriate vault go to fund that award.

More applications (for other vaults) are coming soon...

PS. Is the new credit system ok? 1200 cobblestones for 20 shares and 6000 cobblestones for 100 shares. I heard rumours that the old credit system (800 cobblestones for 10 shares) was too high...
PPS. Also remember that there is no checkpointing system at the moment. The application should be running continuously with an active Internet connection. Otherwise, you might lose valuable CPU/GPU time. Does anyone know how to do checkpointing?
PPPS. Linux application is still missing. I noticed that my own Ubuntu is completely broken, so it might take some time before I'm able to test the Linux application.

Project #0: Crowdfunding done!
Hello all!

According to the project page, Project #0 is now funded and also WUs ended up just in time to reach 100%. :)

Thank you!

So, what now? I thought I wouldn't make more WUs before finding a real innovation competition to crowdfund. That would be Project #1, I think.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Of course, there could be at least small sets of workunits for testing the Linux application(s) and litecoin mining. I was testing litecoin mining yesterday and I think I found the suitable command line parameters for cgminer to mine litecoins with my GTX 275. The hashrate was around 3 kilohashes per second. I think this can't be compared to bitcoin mining (that was around 30 to 40 megahashes per second with my GTX 275), because they use different hashing algorithms...

Project #0: More than 2/3 crowdfunded already!
I have an honor to announce that around 2013-06-11 21:00 UTC we got 44 euros, which is exactly two thirds of the project goal of 66 euros.

I also made some modifications to the project page and now you should be able to see also the bitcoins which are still waiting in the pool.

The progress bar tells that Project #0 is 68.712121212121 % done. Thanks! :)

PS. Please, PM me or write to the forum, if you think you have lost some work/credit. I'll try my best to give you credit. I hope it's technically possible. If it is, I just need to learn some database tricks, I suppose...

v0.18 app issues
If you have still run some v0.18 tasks pls abort all. There are some bigger problems with it, v0.19 should correct these things.

There is a new app litecoin mining now for beta test. You can choose it in your account prefs.

Project update
Next time we will reduce the max results per user to 10 in case for testing and every user can get work. A 32bit linux app is planned. Stats export every 4 hours to keep the stats sites updated. The max daily result to 5000 (for the bigger AMD cards that run as hell). Pls notice that the app need one full CPU core per WU/device but take a full advantage of GPU usage. There are fixed credits for 10shares =800 and 20shares=1600. Keep in mind that you dont suspend/resume a WU, the display driver restarting and after that there is no GPU usage anymore.
If you find any errors pls post the output in forum for debugging.

Crowdfunding received in the pool: 0.01 BTC
Today (2013-6-6) around 17:45 UTC we got 0.01 BTC in the pool 50BTC.com! Thank you all! Later this week we should see the money in the project bitcoin wallet.

The hash rate is currently 2591.30 Mhash/s, which means we can raise around 70.58 US dollars a week assuming the difficulty factor of 15605632.6813 and Exchange rate of 120.741 US dollars / bitcoin.

Welcome to Bitcoin Utopia!

Shortly, Bitcoin Utopia is a platform for crowdfunding public innovation awards with bitcoins.

In more detail: Well, this project is not exactly crunching science results. Instead, it is crunching hash calculations to mine bitcoins. The bitcoins will go to crowdfund innovation competition awards. I haven't yet found an organization which would like to raise the money for their award on Bitcoin Utopia.

For inspiration I have made a huge list of potential (crowdfundable) awards. The list is in the bottom of the project page. This is also an interesting list of innovation awards.

Can you help me to find an organization willing to raise money for a public innovation award?

I have already seen hash rates of 93.06 Mhash/s!

This is the money raised so far for project #0. When "confirmed_rewards" hits 0.01 (or more), the bitcoins will go from the pool to the bitcoin wallet of the project. The amount of money (crowdfunding received) in the project #0 wallet can be found here.
