Q: Is this legal/illegal?
A: According to Suomen Pankki:

According to Verohallinto:

In English: According to the current laws of Finland, bitcoins (and other cryptocurrencies) are not currencies.

According to Petteri Niskanen of Varainhankinta.net:

Rahankeräyksen määritelmä sisältyy rahankeräyslain 3 §:n ensimmäiseen momenttin. Rahankeräyksellä tarkoitetaan toimintaa jossa yleisöön vetoamalla kerätään vastikkeetta rahaa.

Keskeiset kriteerit ovat:

1. yleisöön vetoaminen
2. vastikkeettomuus

Summary in English: Raising bitcoins (and things like gold) doesn't need a fundraising permit, because bitcoins (and gold) are not "money".

As far as we can understand, this is legal in Finland at the moment of writing this.

We have also been in contact with Poliisihallituksen arpajaishallinto (arpajaishallinto@poliisi.fi), which you should contact if you have any doubts.

Q: Can I get Bitcoins when I crunch this project?
A: In short: No. At least, not at the moment.
This BOINC project uses hosts for mining various cryptocurrencies in 3rd part pool servers and after that they will be exchanged to bitcoins. The fee at the moment is 10%, so 90% of the bitcoins will go to science campaigns and 10% for the limited company: Bitcoin Utopia (Consultum Finland Oy). It should be possible to use Gridcoin software to earn some Gridcoins while crunching for Bitcoin Utopia (or some other BOINC project).

Q: Virus scanner says your project has a virus. Does it?
A: Most likely not. It is common that anti-virus software warns about bitcoin (and altcoin) mining software. It's annoying but there is nothing at the moment we can do about it. The only thing to do to avoid the warning messages is to put the BOINC data folder to the antivirus software's whitelist.

See, for example, BFGMiner's FAQ.

Q: Is this a virus?
A: As BFGMiner is being packaged with other trojan scripts, some antivirus
software is falsely accusing bfgminer.exe as being the actual virus, rather than
whatever it is being packaged with. If you installed BFGMiner yourself from a
reputable source then you do not have a virus on your computer. Complain to your
antivirus software company. They seem to be flagging even source code from
BFGMiner as malicious now, even though text source files can't do anything by
themselves.

Q: I read somewhere that the hash rate should be megahashes per second (Mhash/s), but I'm getting kilohashes per second (khash/s). What is wrong with my computer?
A: Those Mhash/s hash rates are most likely for SHA256 cryptocurrencies (e.g. bitcoins) and khash/s hash rates are most likely for Scrypt cryptocurrencies (e.g. litecoins). ~100 khash/s (or more) is quite good a hash rate for Scrypt based cryptocurrencies with a modern GPU. With CPUs, hash rates for Scrypt cryptocurrencies are usually between 1 khash/s and 10 khash/s. In 2013, we were mining SHA256 cryptocurrencies (mostly bitcoins) in Bitcoin Utopia. Now, the difficulty of SHA256 cryptocurrency networks is so high (because of the hashing power from FPGA and ASIC machines) that it is not profitable anymore to use CPUs and/or GPUs for mining SHA256 cryptocurrencies.

Q: How about the taxes?
A: The tax issue is discussed in Taloussanomat (in Finnish).

Q: Can Campaign (#?) be extended?

Please understand this cannot always occur and the decision is not up to Bitcoin Utopia. It is up to the project requesting the assistance. Some campaigns are run by corporate or large educational entities (Universities) who have strict scheduled plans to report fundraising and such. These schedules are sometimes strict and need to be respected. Please refrain from asking for campaign extensions in the forums and Private Message Henri instead.
