Message 11589 - Posted: 23 Oct 2016, 20:58:04 UTC
Last modified: 23 Oct 2016, 21:05:29 UTC

Some changes I have planned for the near-future:
- I will shut down www.bitcoinutopia.com (this should save us around 60 euros a year).
- Bitcoin Utopia will fund only BOINC projects and sites heavily related to BOINC.
- I should get and set up a certificate to support https protocol.

Henri.

The security certificate might cost more than the 60Euros you are saving!

We're down to #3 and you've just intimated that you're about to end that too.

- Can we expect #12 to arrive before you close down #3?
- Does this announcement mean we won't be crunching for Blurf's charity?

And of course I'd like 3 more weeks of #3 for obvious reason :)

I'm looking forward to positive changes. This bit of communication this week is a good start.
I agree that BU should be used to benefit only BOINC projects and closely associated BOINC sites.
Huge charities that have so many other revenue streams are a poor use of our energies. It is much better to give money to them directly.
I will continue in my own small way to contribute here with ASIC's.
Find a way to do some handholding, (regular Message Board updates and user questions answered). That will be key to success for us all.

I'm looking forward to some more campaigns, preferably science based.
Now that #3 has ended, I won't be crunching until another worthy project comes up.

I found this link on another Project where they were talking about it:

https://letsencrypt.org/

They said it's free, got auto renewal and accepted by all browsers. I do NOT run any webpages though so don't use it myself and have no clue if its any good though!!

With SSL cert were the errors in getting the cert, getting it installed on the server or getting BOINC server to like the cert and https URL?

I'm late to the party, but if www.bitcoinutopia.net goes away how will people join, change preferences, or just view their progress. I'm sure I've missed something along the way.

I'm greatly disappointed. My Relay for Life team just approved another *major* project via BU. No wonder you haven't responded to the PM I sent earlier this week.

Several of the links on the frontpage are linking to the ".com" domain and go to a generic "buy this domain" page. Replacing ".com" with ".net" leads to a 404 page with too much information (Ubuntu version etc, change this in Apache security.conf).

I'm using Let's Encrypt for BOINCstats and at work. As long as the certificate is used on one server autorenewal works fine. With two or more servers you have to write a script to copy the certs to the other servers and you are pretty much bound to DNS verification (unless you do it manually). DNS verification has its own issues as my certs have expired several times because the DNS verification failed when autorenewing.
